Apple will begin making its iPhone Pro and Pro Max models in India this year, reducing costs and boosting local production.

Apple is starting to make its most expensive iPhones, the Pro and Pro Max, in India this year. This is a big step for both Apple and India’s manufacturing sector.

Bloomberg says Foxconn, Apple’s main partner, will make the phones. It will start shortly after their global launch this fall. The company has already begun training thousands of workers in Tamil Nadu.

India’s Role in Apple’s Production

Apple is moving more iPhone production to India to lessen its reliance on China. This shift began in 2021. Prime Minister Modi spurred it with financial incentives to attract high-end manufacturing.

China still leads in iPhone making. Apple’s move to India is due to tensions between Beijing and Washington.

Apple’s Global Output

In the last fiscal year, Apple made $14 billion worth of iPhones in India. This accounted for about 14% of its global output. The company will launch the iPhone 16 in India at the same time as the global release.

Other partners, like Pegatron Corp. Tata Group may also start making the Pro models. They are more complex due to their advanced features.

Local Demand and Pricing

By the end of the year, Indian-made iPhones are expected to meet local demand. This could lower Pro model prices by up to 10% due to import duty exemptions.

However, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will still be pricier in India than in some countries. This is due to high component import costs and local taxes.

Most Indian-made Pro models will be exported to Europe, the Middle East, and the US. These regions have higher demand. As the price gap between local and imported iPhones narrows, more Indians are expected to buy locally made phones. This is especially true with festival financing options.

This trend shows Apple’s growing focus on India. Sales there surged by 33%, reaching nearly $8 billion. India’s middle class is rising. More people are using payment plans. Sales could hit $33 billion by 2030.

More details are expected as the global launch of the iPhone 16 series approaches next month.
