Apple’s upcoming Mac mini could eliminate USB-A ports in favor of USB-C, with a significant design change and new M4 chips.
Apple may soon drop USB-A ports from the new Mac mini, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
M4 Mac mini with Five USB-C Ports
Gurman reports that the new model will have five USB-C ports—two in front and three in back. This shift may disappoint USB-A users but aligns with Apple’s trend to eliminate USB-A.
If true, this will be the first Mac mini with front ports. It’s unclear if the base model will match the M4 Pro’s port count. Apple usually offers fewer ports in entry-level models.
Other Ports and Features
The new Mac mini will keep Ethernet, HDMI, and a headphone jack. It will also retain the internal power supply, which is a relief for users.
Currently, the M2 Mac mini has two USB-C and two USB-A ports. The M2 Pro version includes four USB-C and two USB-A ports. The new M4 Pro is expected to have five USB-C ports and no USB-A ports. It will still include Ethernet, HDMI, and audio ports.
Design Change
Gurman notes that the next-gen Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro chips will be the first major design shift since 2010. This marks one of the biggest updates in 14 years.
The new model is expected to be slightly taller than 1.4 inches and similar in size to an Apple TV. Some developers liken it to “an iPad Pro in a small box.”
Launch Date
Chinese suppliers will start shipping the M4 Mac mini in early September. The M4 Pro model will follow in October.
This launch will be Apple’s first use of the same chip generation across its entire Mac lineup. The M4 chip will also debut in the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro within the next year.
