Discover how iOS 18 & tvOS 18’s new auto-subtitles feature simplifies video watching by adding instant captions on rewind in the TV app.
New Auto-Subtitles Feature in iOS 18 and tvOS 18: A Game Changer for Watching Videos
When you’re about to watch a video on your iPhone, you probably open YouTube. On your Apple TV, it’s likely Netflix. But with iOS 18 and tvOS 18, Apple has added a new subtitles feature in its TV app. YouTube and Netflix should consider adding it too.
Auto-Subtitles on Rewind: A Simple but Powerful Addition
At WWDC, Apple introduced a small but useful feature in tvOS 18. It makes watching videos easier. This new feature turns on subtitles for 10 seconds when you rewind a video. It assumes you missed something important.
For years, Apple TV users could ask Siri, “What did she say?” to rewind and temporarily display subtitles. Now, your device does this automatically when you skip back, without needing to ask Siri.
Available Across iOS 18, tvOS 18, and More
This auto-subtitle feature isn’t just for Apple TV. It’s also on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. You can try it out in the beta versions or wait for the public release next month. I’ve been using it all summer, and it’s been a fantastic addition.
The feature works flawlessly. But, it only works in Apple’s TV app. Apple can’t control how other video apps work. This could inspire YouTube, Netflix, and other platforms to add a similar feature.
While some users might find auto-subtitles annoying, most will likely find it helpful. It’s a simple feature that adds a lot of value, and now I want it in every video app on my devices.
Would you like to see auto-subtitles in your other video apps? Have you tried it in the beta versions? Share your thoughts in the comments!
