The iPhone 16, launching in September, will feature minor upgrades and slightly larger displays. AI features will be delayed to iOS 18.1.
Apple is boosting production for the iPhone 16, aiming for a September launch. This follows its trend of September releases, except for the iPhone 12, which debuted in October.
Mass production of the iPhone 16 started in June, with India’s production kicking off in July. Samsung and LG will supply displays, while BOE awaits Apple’s approval.
The main reason to upgrade from the iPhone 15 to the 16 is “Apple Intelligence.” Currently, only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will support this new AI feature. The iPhone 16 will see minor upgrades: an extra 2 GB of RAM, support for spatial video, and a slightly bigger battery. As usual, these improvements are small.
Interestingly, “Apple Intelligence” is abbreviated as “AI,” a clever twist. However, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg says the feature won’t be available at the iPhone 16’s launch. It will come with iOS 18.1. The iPhone 16 will ship with iOS 18. Recently, a beta version of iOS 18.1 was released for developers to explore Apple’s AI approach.
iOS 18.1 is set to launch in October. Gurman reports that Apple deemed the iPhone 16’s delay unnecessary, despite its AI feature. Besides AI, the iPhone 16 is expected to have larger screens than the iPhone 15.
For fans of big screens and AI, the iPhone 16 is thrilling. Yet, it leaves iPhone 14 and 15 owners feeling left out. These models might seem outdated with AI phones coming.
The iPhone 15 will still be a good phone for a while. However, AI is likely to be a big deal in future Apple products. The iPhone 16 is on track to be a top phone in 2024. Still, the wait for AI might disappoint many Apple fans.
