Meta Cancels High-End La Jolla Headset, Focuses on Affordable AR and VR Devices

Meta Affordable AR

Meta drops plans for La Jolla headset due to high costs. Focus shifts to affordable Ventura headset and upcoming AR glasses.

Meta has halted work on its Apple Vision Pro rival, La Jolla. This project started last November and aimed for a 2027 launch. However, Meta has now decided to cancel it.

The main reason for the cancellation is the high cost of the headset. It was using MicroOLED displays, which made it much more expensive than Meta’s goal of keeping it under $1,000. The $3,500 Apple Vision Pro hasn’t been very successful. So, Meta likely thinks there’s not enough demand for two high-priced headsets.

Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, commented on the news. He said, “We have many prototypes in development, but not all of them make it to production.” “Such decisions happen all the time. A single canceled project doesn’t tell the full story.””

The high-end La Jolla headset is no longer in development. But, Meta is working on a cheaper headset called Ventura. It may be released by year’s end. Also, Meta is expected to unveil new AR glasses next month. The Quest 4 headset may arrive in 2026.
