Samsung Galaxy S25 series will launch in January 2024 with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset globally, leaving Exynos 2500 for foldable models, as reported by Hankyung.
Galaxy S25 Series Gets Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Chip
The Galaxy S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra will all use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip. Initially, Samsung planned to use its Exynos 2500 chip in some regions. Now, it has opted for Qualcomm’s chip globally.
This move marks a shift from the current strategy. Previously, the Galaxy S24 and S24+ used the Exynos 2400 chip widely. Only the S24 Ultra had the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip. Samsung aims for top performance in its flagship devices by using the best components.
Performance Expectations
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to boost AI and GPU performance by over 30%. This improvement helps Samsung compete better with Apple’s iPhone 16, which focuses on AI. Samsung has used Exynos chips in high-end models before to save costs and manage supply. Now, it aims for higher performance with Snapdragon chips.
Financial Investments and Market Position
Samsung has ramped up its spending on smartphone chips. Investment rose from about $5.69 billion in 2021 to around $8.75 billion in 2023. This now makes up about 20% of its production costs. Qualcomm, once the top chip supplier, has fallen behind MediaTek in shipments. Yet, it still leads in sales with a 36% market share.
Samsung aims to boost its position in the premium AI processor market, currently led by Apple. The company plans to promote the Galaxy S25 with Qualcomm’s chip.
Exynos 2500 in Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7
Samsung’s semiconductor team is working on the Exynos 2500 chip to enhance its performance and stability. The company is also advancing its 3nm chip production to stay competitive. After successfully launching the Exynos W1000 for the Galaxy Watch 7, Samsung aims to have the Exynos 2500 ready by next year.
The Exynos 2500 chip will be in the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7, expected to launch in August.
