Apple’s September 9th event will unveil the iPhone 16, new AirPods, and Apple Watches, while older models like the iPhone 15 Pro and AirPods 2 may be discontinued.
iPhone 15 Pro & Pro Max
Since 2018, Apple has dropped flagship iPhones a year after release. The reason? Models frequently mirror their predecessors’ designs. This pattern suggests the iPhone 15 Pro will be discontinued. It’s Apple’s first with a titanium body. Additionally, it might be the last Pro model with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screens. The upcoming iPhone 16 Pros are expected to have larger displays. Moreover, the unique Blue Titanium color of the iPhone 15 Pro likely won’t return in the iPhone 16 lineup.
iPhone 14 Plus
The iPhone 14 Plus was Apple’s first large, affordable iPhone. It followed the less successful iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini. This model offers a 6.7-inch display and long battery life, similar to the Pro Max, but at a lower price. Given last year’s trend, the iPhone 14 Plus is likely to be discontinued. The iPhone 13 was kept, but the 13 mini was dropped. So, the iPhone 14 might also stick around longer.
iPhone 13
Released in 2021, the iPhone 13 brought better battery life, a new camera, and a smaller notch. It started at $799, now it’s $599. Being nearly three years old, it’s likely to be discontinued. The iPhone 14 might then take its place at $599, at least until the iPhone SE 4 arrives.
Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, and SE 2
Next week, we expect updates for all three Apple Watch models. The Series 10 might have better displays, a slimmer design, and a new chipset. The Ultra 3 could see minor updates, while the SE 3 might switch to a plastic casing for cost savings. These new models may debut and likely discontinue the current Series 9, Ultra 2, and SE 2.
AirPods 2 and 3
Apple has sold the AirPods 2 since 2019 as a budget option. Even with the release of the better AirPods 3 in 2021, the AirPods 2 remained on the market. But this might soon change. Next week, experts expect Apple to introduce two new models of AirPods 4. One will likely replace the AirPods 2. The other will be a mid-tier model to replace the AirPods 3, with noise cancellation. If these new models arrive, Apple will likely discontinue the AirPods 2 and 3.
iPad mini 6 and iPad 10
Apple’s iPad mini 6 and iPad 10 are also due for updates. Earlier this year, the price of the iPad 10 dropped. Rumors suggest a refresh is coming soon. After the iPad 11 releases, the iPad 10 might stay but at a lower price. This is uncertain. The iPad mini, yet, is unlikely to stick around. Apple has not kept older models in recent years. The new iPad mini should support Apple Intelligence and have more storage. It may also support Apple Pencil Pro.
